Cheerful Music with Pots and Windmills

Serate al Bramante ‘Incantations’ by Martien Greneveld Performance on homemade instruments and electronics

A varied and compelling performance by Martien Groeneveld from the Netherlands formed the end of the serie “Serate al Bramante”.
And it was educational, too.|
Some people had brought along their children, who were enchanted by the way Groeneveld constructed his instruments on the spot with the help of pieces of tubing, string, wood, metal and whistles, out of which he knew how to produce so many varied and fascinating sounds.
Like a huge, vertical xylophone, on which even a change in the position of the wooden bars produced soft, rich, harmonic sounds, in addition to dry, ticking sounds. These primitive-looking instruments, often enormous in size and constructed with quite ordinary materials, are perfect for a show in which the visual component plays an important role, and used with the specialist knowledge of a musician.
Like a true Dutchman, with the help of parts from other instruments Groeneveld finally transformed the gigantic standing xylophone into a real windmill, whose rotating arms produced sounds. The artist invited the audience to come and share with him a try on the plastic tubing placed around in buckets with water and equiped with some kind of pressurized flutes.
At first only a handful timidly approached, but after a while almost everyone took part, with Groeneveld producing all sorts of sounds and rhythms on other instruments. It seemed as if we had returned to the days of John Cage and David Tudor with their carefree and cheerful music-making, or to the futurist evenings by Russolo with his intonarumori, or noise intoners.
